2019 Edition of the World Observatory of Subnational Finance and Investment

This 2019 report of the World Observatory presents the main organisational and financial indicators for subnational governments in over 120 federal and unitary countries worldwide. The study reveals that around the world, subnational governments account for:

  • 24% of public expenditure, or 8.6% of GDP
  • 37% of public investment, or 1.3% of GDP
  • 26% of public revenue, or 8.6% of GDP

2016 Pilot Study: Subantional Governments around the World: Structure and Finance 

In October 2016, the OECD and UCLG have joined forces to conduct a pilot study, which was launched at the UCLG Summit in Bogota. It was a first attempt to build a systematic data compilation on local finances across in the world, based on quantitative and qualitative data. This study presents the main organisational and financial indicators related to subnational governments in 101 federal and unitary countries worldwide. The study confirmed that there is a growing demand worldwide for reliable, objective and comparative information and data on different topics regarding multi-level governance and finance.
